The major accelerating factor in the oxidation of lubricating oil is the production of nitrate esters within the oil. Nitrate esters can decompose into free radicals which initiate oxidation reactions. A few experiments have been done to determine the effect of nitrate esters in causing oxidation in lubricating oils. It has also been experimentally proven that decomposing or transforming nitrate esters into stable non free-radical compounds would contribute to the reduction of oxidation.
